Nicotine is the addictive chemical compound found in tobacco, one of the reasons smoking is addictive.
Nicotine pouches can be used as an aid to quitting smoking and they have worked for many people.
The smokeless pouches replace the ‘buzz’ from smoking nicotine without the habit of smoking. They are available in different strengths so the aim would be to reduce your nicotine intake over time and eventually quit all nicotine products.
They are usually not the best or most effective option available as a Nicotine Replacement Therapy, but as an alternative to smoking, nicotine pouches are believed to be the safer option because the pouches are made without using harmful tobacco, and other cancer-causing chemicals.
How do I use nicotine pouches?
Once you have chosen the flavour and strength you take a pouch from the tin, place it under the top lip (between the lip and gum), to the side of your front teeth. The nicotine is absorbed through your gum. Each pouch should last around 60 minutes and if the pouches are being used as a quitting aid they should be removed after the ‘buzz’ passes.
What NRT options are available?
If you decide nicotine pouches aren’t right for you there are other options available –
- The Nicotine patch is a small square patch with an adhesive back worn on the upper arm or leg that releases nicotine into the body. You reduce the nicotine patch strength over time and eventually quit.
- Nicotine Gum is available in different flavours and strengths. Like nicotine pouches, it produces a tingling effect as the nicotine is absorbed and at times is placed in a similar position to the pouches.
- Champix is a medicine that can help you stop smoking by reducing the cravings for nicotine. It also helps with the withdrawal symptoms you get when you quit smoking.
